Michigan Fall Color Tour Part V
September 20th, 2016
Only two days until the first day of fall! Last Monday, we shared Michigan Fall Color Tour Part IV and highlighted fall from a bird’s eye view.
Pick your favorite fall color tour that has been shared, book a stay at Hotel Walloon and come for a long weekend to enjoy the natural beauty of northern Michigan! At the end of a long day of sightseeing, head back to Hotel Walloon for the perfect night of relaxation in front of our authentic stone fireplace, sip some wine and indulge with hors d’ouevres provided by the Walloon Lake Inn.
This week, read about Traverse City’s M22 Fall Color Tour. This tour covers some of the best spots in the area including Sleeping Bear Dunes, Glen Arbor, Leland and more.
Sleeping Bear Dunes
The first stop on this week’s M22 Fall Color Tour is Sleeping Bear Dunes. Sleeping Bear Dunes is a National Park with an incredible fall scenery and perfect views of the lake. Upon arriving at the Sleeping Bear Dunes, take the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, which is a 7.4 mile loop that allows you to have views of Glen Lake. Along this scenic drive, stop at the Cottonwood Trail, a 1.5 mile walk, that overlooks rolling hills and will allow you to look at all the Michigan fall colors. After taking the short walk along the Cottonwood Trail, finish the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive before heading out on the next stop on the M22 Fall Color Tour.
Sight see your way along M22 through the quaint town of Glen Arbor, located along the shores of Lake Michigan. Take a break from the drive and stop at one of the local favorite dining establishments that enjoy views of Sleeping Bear Bay. After enjoying a fine dining restaurant in Glen Arbor, walk through one of the numerous art galleries to see the local artist’s work displayed.
After spending some time in Glen Arbor, enjoy the peak foliage along M22 while heading north to Leland. Wander through “Fishtown” located on the docks in Leland, home to the historic fish shanties. If you are feeling adventurous, explore the local parks and trails for a mid-afternoon exercise while enjoying the Michigan autumn day.
Continue enjoying the northern Michigan fall colors as you drive a little bit further north to the town of Northport, located almost at the top of the Leelanau Peninsula. Walk the docks in Northport or venture through the wooded walking trail to capture the true “Up North” experience in this lakeside village, while admiring the fall colors. While in Northport, stop to explore Kilcherman’s Christmas Cove Farm. The apple orchard at Kilcherman’s Christmas Cove Farm boasts of fifteen different types of apples and crisp apple cider that makes this the perfect fall day.
Prior to returning to Hotel Walloon, enjoy the fall colors and the beautiful views of Lake Michigan on your way to Suttons Bay. While in Suttons Bay, enjoy a wine tasting and dinner at Black Star Farms. Black Star Farms is located less than 10 minutes outside of Suttons Bay in the beautiful countryside. Enjoy watching the leaves changing color as you taste some of the best wine that Michigan has to offer. Before starting the return trip to Hotel Walloon, watch the perfect sunset over Suttons Bay.
After an adventurous day of touring M22 and the northern Michigan fall colors, return to Hotel Walloon to enjoy desserts in the Hearth room and a drink from the bar in front of the roaring field stone fireplace.
