Top 5 Fall Day Trips
September 22nd, 2018
We are often asked, “What is there to do in Northern Michigan in the fall?” “Isn’t it…dead… up there in the fall?” The answer is that there is loads of fall fun to be had in Northern Michigan. And yes, it is a little slower here that time of year but we love it that way!
Below are 5 of the many fall day trips you can experience while staying at Hotel Walloon.
Pond Hill Farm: We know you’ve heard it over and over again, but we’ll say it again. WE LOVE POND HILL FARM. Sure, sometimes farms aren’t for everyone but trust us- there really is something for everyone at Pond Hill Farm. They’re located just north of Harbor Springs along M-119 where the fall colors are especially spectacular. Peruse their farm store where you’ll find homemade jams, jellies, locally grown canned goods and more to take home. Walk upstairs for a delicious farm to table lunch and a glass of their homemade beer or wine. From the end of September to the end of October, Pond Hill Farm offers Fall Fest Weekends where you can pick out a pumpkin from their patch, enjoy fresh cider & donuts, go on a hay ride, try your luck at pumpkin bowling or simply take a walk to the top of the vineyard overlooking beautiful Lake Michigan. For more information on Pond Hill Farm and all they have to offer, visit http://www.pondhill.com/
Fall color tour on M-119: If you’re up North at Pond Hill Farm, you might as well keep driving through the world-famous Tunnel of Trees. This is one of the most spectacular scenic routes in the country year-round, but when the leaves have turned their shades of orange and red, it simply cannot be beat. Colorful trees hug the road making it a tunnel of vibrant foliage. As you drive along the winding road you will notice sections of the trees opening and peeking out over stunning views of Lake Michigan. There are many scenic overlooks along the road allowing for some great photo opportunities. During your trip, be sure to stop by the Good Hart General Store for a special keepsake. Apple Fest in Charlevoix: Nothing screams fall like a good ol’ fashioned apple fest. There’s apple cider, apple fritters, apple pie, apple butter and yes, you guessed it… apple sauce. Visit beautiful downtown Charlevoix for their annual Apple Fest, usually held the second week of October, for some of the best souvenirs, live music and everything apple you could ever desire. Visit the Charlevoix Chamber of Commerce Events Calendar for more information on the Apple Fest and to see what else they have to offer in Charlevoix. http://business.charlevoix.org/events/calendar
Visit the Little Traverse Wheelway: This smooth paved trail offers 23 miles of terrain that will entertain all levels of ability. Biking, inline skating, walking and jogging are all welcome on the Little Traverse Wheelway. There are many beautiful places to stop along the way including restaurants, places to hunt for Petoskey Stones, breweries and more! Zipline canopy tour: Feeling a little more adventurous? A Zipline Canopy Tour is certainly a way to get your adrenaline pumping while enjoying the fall scenery. Northern Michigan is filled with rolling hills, making it the perfect location for ziplining. Wildwood Rush is located only 10 minutes from Hotel Walloon. They offer guided tours featuring sky bridges, platforms and 9 ziplines all overlooking a beautiful and lush forest. Not enough adventure?
