Hotel Walloon, where guests can enjoy the charm and hospitality of the early twentieth century along with the comforts of every modern amenity. Settled against the breathtaking backdrop of Walloon Lake, this independently owned and operated boutique hotel features 32 unique, elegant and comfortable guest rooms.
Centrally located between Petoskey, Boyne City, Harbor Springs, Charlevoix, Traverse City and Mackinaw, Hotel Walloon is the perfect “home away from home” to enjoy all the adventure Northern Michigan has to offer. We look forward to exceeding guest expectations and adhering to the highest standards of quality, hospitality and character in Northern Michigan.
Our room was incredible! It was spacious and well-appointed with modern appliances hidden behind custom cabinetry, room-darkening blinds and an extremely comfortable king-sized bed. While these things are certainly nice and, on some level, expected wherever you stay it was the details that set the Hotel Walloon apart. We were pleased to discover that the bathroom had heated floors. At the bedside, the Hotel furnished an Amazon Echo along with a handwritten and personalized weather report for the duration of our stay. Another example of attention to detail was found as we exited the Hotel to go to dinner we saw a stand filled with umbrellas for guests to use should the weather take a turn. The Hotel also offers a gathering place off from the lobby where cocktails are served along with hors d’oeuvres throughout the day and desserts at night. There is a billiards room and a gym on site, as well. I think what has impressed me the most about the Hotel Walloon is the fact that they have resisted simply relying upon their physical location on the shore of Walloon Lake to provide guests with a standard stay (see my earlier review of Mackinac island’s Mission Point Inn). Instead, they have expanded upon it in so many different ways to ensure that their guests enjoy themselves fully. I cannot recommend this fantastic hotel strenuously enough.
We loved the “guests-only” bar area, where we enjoyed the complimentary apps and desserts and the excellent hand-made cocktails. Also, really appreciated the coffee and muffins in the morning. The hotel facilities are beautiful, including the lovely hot tub outside near the beach. And next door is the really fun Barrel Back restaurant, with spectacular views of the lake. This is also an excellent home base for visiting Northern Michigan, Just an hour from the Traverse City airport, 15 minutes to Petoskey, less than an hour to Mackinac. All easy day trips. Perhaps the most remarkable thing about the hotel is the level of service. Everyone on staff knew our names and was incredibly warm and also helpful with tips for enjoying our vacation. I understand that they’ve studied the Ritz Carlton model – I think they’ve actually improved on it.
Fantastic hotel in a great location with even greater off-season rates. You simply will not find a better experience, nicer staff or cleaner rooms in Northern Michigan. The town of Walloon is magical in the winter with a couple of great dining options and really great little shops. A short drive and you can get to Charlevoix, Petoskey or Boyne. The cocktails at the hotel bar were amazing as was the late night dip in the outdoor 15 person spa. Do yourself a favor and book your Northern Michigan getaway with Hotel Walloon now!
This, not for long, hidden gem is certainly unique to northern Michigan. The love of the owner for Walloon Lake is evident in the details of the hotel as well as the surrounding developments. The management and staff are true assets willing to step beyond their job descriptions to assist in any way. We were familiar with the old Walloon Village and are amazed at the new. The charm and history of Walloon Lake has been enhanced, not changed by the hotel and nearby properties. We traveled in a group of 8 people and had the ability to relax together both outdoors and in. The hotel’s main floor has small gathering areas that can be used for conversations, game playing, reading or just quiet time including a guest-only bar with bartenders in the evening, complimentary snacks and beverages throughout the day. Rooms are comfortable and clean with modern touches and technology although you feel like you are at a long standing lakeside lodge not a 4 year old hotel. Noise is not a problem. Even rooms facing the road are quiet unless you leave the door open or are on the balcony. Even then there isn’t too much traffic. Excellent food and beverage opportunities are found in the Village as well in nearby towns like Boyne City and Petoskey. There are plenty of places to explore within an hour’s drive or beyond plus golf, water sports, hiking, biking and more. Make sure to leave some time to sit and watch the beautiful lake and nature though.
My husband and I have been traveling to Northern Michigan for several years and have searched in vain to find that perfect hotel we want to return to year after year … until we stayed at Hotel Walloon! Wow! This is exactly what we’ve been looking for! The property is beautiful, as is the adjacent lake. The room we stayed in was beautifully decorated and extremely comfortable. We spent a lot of time lounging near the lake at the hotel’s private beach area … glorious! The staff was friendly and efficient. My husband and I loved the fact that there was always some sort of refreshment available in the lobby – pastries, yogurt parfaits for breakfast, cookies and lemonade during the day, appetizers in the evening. And there were little chocolates on the nightstand after turn down service! The service, the property and the amenities exceeded my expectations. I can’t wait to return!
An absolutely wonderful experience at Hotel Walloon! This is one of the best hotels we have ever stayed at. The friendliness, attention to detail and over the top extras are worth a visit. Truly a special place. The entire staff was so friendly, and made you feel like part of a family. We can’t wait to return.
Hotel Walloon was absolute perfection. I honestly wish I could give more than 5 stars because they truly deserve it. From the moment we reached out for a quote they were nothing but attentive, genuine, hospitable and accommodating. We instantly felt comfortable and knew we were in good hands. The entire staff is focused on the guests feeling at home. All of our wedding guests stayed at the hotel and have continued to rave about the service.
We stayed for an extended weekend and the hotel and staff were wonderful. The hotel is beautiful and well decorated and the location on Walloon Lake makes you feel you are in a fairy tale. The hotel is near many amazing places in northern Michigan and it is easy to fill your days with activities and scenic wonders should you wish to do so. A definite must stay in the area.
I hope this hotel never goes away. You know the expression, “The longer you wait- the better things get?” Well, I’ve waited my entire life for a luxury hotel in Northern Michigan. A hotel that can satisfy my tasteful expectations and luxury needs with proximity to water sports and snow sports. A year-round operation with so much to offer for every season. Hotel Walloon, please tell me you’re here to stay?!
The best part(s) of this hotel is the service and the staff. Incredible at every hour of the day and night. The hotel staff are friendly, professional and go out of their way for their guests. No such thing as a special request. EVERY request is special to them.
And I want to talk a little bit about the design and attractive features of this hotel. It is obvious that details mattered most when this hotel was built. The unlacquered brass fixtures, lighting, granite and marble surfaces and Oriental rugs are in great taste everywhere. The decor is rich, yet subtle, but entirely appropriate to old-school Walloon Lake. I liken the look and interiors of this hotel to a luxury boutique hotel in Vermont, Connecticut or a manor-house hotel in the English countryside.
Thank you again for a terrific stay. I am already planning to buy a spectacular book and save it. Save it for my next stay at Hotel Walloon when I can sit in front of the fire and read it. I know the chocolate covered almonds and hot apple cider will be readily available. I’ll be dreaming about the Snickerdoodle cookies until then. See you next time. I’m coming back!
