Newly Constructed in 2015The only privately owned AAA Four Diamond Hotel in Northern Michigan, Hotel Walloon’s mission is to bring a world-class experience to guests on Walloon Lake as the best Resort in Michigan. Newly constructed in 2015, it’s design captures the vintage elegance, rich history, and charming hospitality of early 20th century Hotels in this area.
The name ‘Hotel Walloon’ was first coined in the 1890s by Mrs. James Hass. The original building acted as the first boarding house in the Village. It was later moved and placed beside the New Walloon Hotel Clubhouse (the current location of Hotel Walloon) and was used as a kitchen and to house help.
Prior to Hotel Walloon’s development, the Village was facing years of neglect and managing a court battle over the Village lakefront. In 2012, Jonathan Borisch entered the scene as a developer and visionary the village needed. Mr. Borisch spent his initial retirement years reviving Walloon, the place where he grew up and enjoyed summers with his family for several decades, to what it is today.
Prior to the Borisch family’s investment into the Village, there was only one business – a longtime general store. In 2022 and after 24 years in business, the Penfold Family made the decision to retire from the Walloon Village General Store. With trust for their efforts in the Village, the Penfold’s requested the Borisch Family take over the operations.
Look Forward to New Additions in 2023After the Penfold’s retirement, construction began on a new building for the General Store standing in the same place its long-time predecessor had. The Renwick building is a new space directly across the street from Village Green Park. The top two floors will offer (16) luxury condominiums and the bottom floor will host the Walloon Lake General Store featuring beloved traditions from the previous storefront.
Open at their temporary location for Summer 2023, the Walloon Village General Store features fresh produce, deli sandwiches, and Walloon Lake merchandise.
Sweetwater Floral, owned by Kalin Sheick, opened its flagship location at The Lofts of Walloon retail space (the same location of the Walloon Village General Store) this May. Open for creative seasonal workshops and offering curated botanical gifts, Sweetwater Floral is a must-visit this summer.
Walloon FavoritesToday, the Village boasts about (20) businesses and is still on the path of growth. Enjoy fine dining cuisine at Walloon Lake Inn or relax by the lake at Barrel Back Restaurant. Sweet Tooth, a local candy shop serving over 20 flavors of Moomers ice cream, will also open for the season on Memorial Day.
